Anchorage, Alaska – A local dentist opened up his doors early on Saturday to provide free dental services to those in the community who did not have insurance, or could not afford dental work.

Dr. Terry Preece with the Anchorage Healthy Smiles Center says the line formed early and some people waited for hours. But, he says no one complained, and everyone seemed very grateful to receive the free dental care.

Preece says there are so many people who do not qualify for Medicaid or do not have dental insurance, and he wanted to help them out.

A local dentist is offering free, emergency dental treatments next Friday for “anyone with a dental emergency, who cannot afford it,” according to a press release from Anchorage Healthy Smile Center.

The dentist, Dr. Terry Preece, will provide the services “at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis” on Friday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The occasion: a sense of community spirit and recognition of Dental Health Month.

Says Preece: “People helping people have been one of the prominent strengths of our country. During these hard economic times, the spirit of giving and helping is needed more than ever.”

Local dentist Dr. Terry Preece provided an opportunity for his patients to help their pockets plus help the community as well.

Dr. Preece raised over $1,800 over the holiday season to donate to the Salvation Army.

For $79, patients were able to receive exams, cleanings, and x-rays with all the money donated to the Salvation Army.

Altogether Dr. Preece was able to raise a little over $1,800 from participating patients and personally made up the difference to make the total donated $2,000, which he presented to the Salvation Army.

Dr. Terry J. Preece and his staff at the Anchorage Health Smile Center saw 24 patients between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. and donated nearly $10,000 in free dental care to those with a dental emergency who could not otherwise afford care.

“After working 14-1/2 hours, we were exhausted but ecstatic that we had been able to help so many people,” said Dr. Preece. “During these hard economic times, the spirit of giving and helping is needed more than ever. I’m grateful that I have been a part of such an incredible profession for more than 30 years and could provide this service.”

Dr. Preece and the dental team provided exams, cleanings, fillings, extractions and palliative emergency care. Dr. Preece’s wife Debbie, president of the Alliance of the American Dental Association, operated the front desk, registering all the patients who were treated. Local radio and television stations assisted by spreading the word in the community about the free clinic.

This event was the fourth Free Dental Emergency Day Dr. Preece has sponsored, but as a new Anchorage resident, this is the first observance in the City of Lights and Flowers.
